Google is making changes again, no one knows what these changes are going to be, and as a good company to make sure they are not going to lose their clients, they are giving us a heads up to make sure we are ahead of the curve and prepared. I don’t mind the changes, It honestly keeps those of us practicing the white hat parts of this business up to date on the trends and what is really moving the needle for organic traffic. Recently I had to deal with a company that does not practice anything ethical. They are providing leads at such a low rate, with zero transparency there is no way they are doing anything ethical. I don’t want to put them on blast in this article but I will say that they are in the real estate game and in South Carolina, that is all I’m going to say. A little childish of me, but anyone that has read my articles knows that I’m going to take down the dishonest companies that are lying to their customers. With that being said, I am no longer having to deal with this company. I’ll give more details to that story in another blog.

I can honestly say that VIRTUALLTECH.COM has been nothing but transparent, and allows anyone and everyone to use our site to help with their link building. All we ask is that you open your site to do the same, a little #f4f if you will.

I put together 4 points on what has been the 4 staples of my career, to make sure there is nothing that Google or even Bing, (Yes I know I said Bing, and, will write about how that engine needs some love) , can do to take away my SERP ranking, with or without Ads. Let all start to practice these 4 steps and see what can happen in 2020.

  • Content and Quality: Content and quality guidelines are designed to favor original, high-quality content that offers comprehensive, insightful information.
    1.  Does the page include a compelling title and description, and do they match up with the body content? 
    2. Is this something you’d bookmark or share with a friend or colleague?
  • Expertise: Expertise looks at the author and the quality of the content. 
    1. Is the page trustworthy? Is it fact-checked? 
    2. Is there an author bio with a photo and credentials? Google has cracked down on dubious claims on “your money or your life” pages–or pages that relate to your health or financial well-being.
  • Presentation and Production: This area looks at how you present information. 
    1. Does it look good? 
    2. Does the page load quickly? 
    3. Does it contain high-quality images and be formatted in a way that makes it easy to read? 
    4. Does it look good on mobile?
    5. Is there an excessive amount of ads, or anything else that might hinder the user experience (popups, etc.)?
  • Competitive comparison: In this case, a ranking drop might not mean that your website is bad, just that your competitors may offer more engaging, out-of-the-box solutions than you currently have on your site. 
    1. How does the website compare to competitor websites? 
    2. Does your content solve problems? 
    3. Does it align with user expectations?

This Week’s Updates!

I am going to be hitting you with an updated version of last weeks blog and let you know what you can expect to find with Google’s new Algorithm Update!

So, diving right into it!

New research shows that organic search is 53% of traffic to websites for most analytics accounts. So, organic search is the biggest piece of the pie. I have been saying this to all of my clients for the past year. Nothing is going to take away from your organic traffic.

I know that this is mainly an update on Google, but it’s fair to mention that TripAdvisor has blocked or removed 1.5 million fake reviews. Gives meaning to the term “fake news!” This is great for people who have relied on that platform in the past. Which then brings us back to Google, they are following and taking away a lot of the 5 star review snippets. The reason behind the removing of the snippets, is based on the fact that you can no longer review your own webpage, this was leading to a lot of spamming.

In regards to an update with Facebook, a new study shows that the best place to advertise is in the newsfeed. According to this study, 60% of the ads are showing high conversions. Second to this was in the Instagram feed. Not in the stories, not as many people are looking through all of the stories.

Snapchat, for those of you with a big enough audience, this information is going to be worth you investing time. They are now allowing up to 3-minute ads. By using this feature you will be able to use that famous phrase, “SWIPE UP!” you will allow your audience to use that feature to head over to your website.

Finally, YouTube has released video reach campaigns. You can load 3 different ad assets and then YouTube uses machine learning to determine the best combination of ads to maximize reach. Recently they came out with ads sequencing so you could do something like 7 ads in a row, (or whatever amount you wanted), and then it shows it to people in a sequence.  You can do it for all of the versions of the ads, six second bumper ads, the skippable in stream ads and the non skippable in stream ads.

WHAT IS A NOFOLLOW LINK?

Let’s go back to why nofollow is important. Well internally for a website it matters really mostly because of crawl budget and page sculpting. Crawl budget is the idea that you only want Google to crawl certain parts of the website because it allows those pieces of the website to get seen more frequently, and to get more attention, so if you use a nofollow, what you can do is tell Google don’t visit these other parts of the website through these hyperlinks. So, if you had hundreds of links at the bottom of the page and you wanted them for users but you didn’t want Google to follow them you could put a nofollow on those.

What is a NoFollow link for SEO, and why does it matter for search engine optimization?

Today’s Blog is a super geeky topic, the nofollow link and why does that matter for SEO. I’m going to give you some context on all of the different way that people use it and also two new updates to the nofollow link that haven’t been there before . . .

HERE WE GO!

Okay so first, what is a nofollow link attribute? Well it’s a piece of HTML that you put on the hyperlink, and what it does is it tells Google, “Do Not Follow this Link, and do not pass page rank!” One, don’t follow if from one page to the other and the other one, if your trying to pass link weight from one page to another because the more links you have that are high quality that point to a page from another page in Google the higher you rank. This is saying that don’t pass that link weight over to that other page. But of course, Google wouldn’t be Google is things didn’t change.

So what happened is, Google recently came out and they said that the nofollow is just a HINT! It’s not the directive so they don’t have to honor it. You might be asking how recent is this, well they announced this new information on September 9th, 2019. Pro Tip: a good backlink profile shouldn’t only have followed links pointing at it. Instead it should have a good mix of nofollow and followed links, all with different types of anchor text.

So, Google came out with two new things recently, one is REL SPONSORED, and this is something that also can go on a nofollow link that say this is sponsored content. This is important to all of you that are paying for links. Make sure that they are including the nofollow and a rel sponsored in the HTML hyperlink. The second big push from Google is the REL UGC. This is the type of link that you would put on user generated content, (UGC).

Now you might be asking what is page sculpting? Well the idea is if you have 10 links on a page and you want to give the most weight to one link you will add nofollow to nine of those links in the hypertext now Google will be focusing on those other nine. At that end the purpose of this is to give you back a little of control. Basically saying that is there are links on your website to websites that you don’t want to be connected to, you are saying to Google that yes, we are hyper linked together but do no want to follow. From what I can conclude in all of this, is the basic idea that Google is allowing you to make sure that your are aware of who you are linking with, that link building is now a relationship built on a partnership rather than an algorithm.

Let me ask you, In which picture are you quicker to recognize the brand that is selling you a product? The 2 pictures both show Ecommerce stores selling a product, but one is clearly more recognizable. Some people may even have thought that Amazon was the seller of the cabin, rather than the company Allwood.

The difference here is between Shopify and Amazon. More people will recognize the Amazon name, but by far, more people make purchases on Shopify today. You may have recently made a purchase on a Shopify site without even knowing it, given that the only hint may be a small “Powered by Shopify” at the bottom. We so often see people wanting to sell products through amazon because of the traffic it gets, but the fact is that you may be shooting yourself in the foot as it were. When people build an Ecommerce market, they want to sell through their store and build a brand. Amazon allows you to sell through their store, while Shopify allows you to truly build your own marketplace, and host a brand.

There is of course a trade off with both, Amazon will get more traffic, as it is an enormous site. Shopify will need traffic directed, starting with good SEO and social media both of which Shopify facilitates wonderfully when compared to Squarespace or WordPress. While both may help you sell products, Shopify may be the one to help you build your brand.
